UTE

Utes!  How could I have forgotten about this very important part of Australian culture?  Besides the ever-prevalent safari snorkels (in fact I just saw one drive by the window, right now) what you would probably notice most about the vehicles on the road here is the abundance of these really silly looking cars.  At least I think they're silly looking, but they're really quite popular.

Many different varieties and customizations, but most important is the sports-car front and truckbed.

Naturally, Ute is short for Utility Vehicle (so it's pronounced 'yoot').  If you want to sound Aussie and can fake the accent, the most important things must be noun abbreviations and a few key rhyming slangs.  Have a Captain Cook, would you?  It's time to hit the frog and toad.  Off to Brizzy in the ute!

  1. I suppose our pickups "look silly" to them... Captain Cook sounds like a drink. Frog & toad?

  2. They have regular pickups too... but they're not very cool! Utes have the same kind of status implication that muscle cars have in the US. "To have a Captain Cook" is to take a look; "frog and toad" is road. Yeah, rhyming slang... doesn't make any sense!
