A recent discussion about North American birds had me thinking again about birds in Australia. While we have numerous parrots and cockatoos, overall it seems like there's less variety of small birds (in town at least, while willy wagtails and fairy wrens are fairly common I hardly ever see honeyeaters) and the birds we see on a daily basis have distinct calls and songs that it hasn't been too difficult to learn them. (Or probably I am just a bird nerd.)
In particular, that conversation had me thinking about the ducks in our neighborhood which are common wood ducks. I think I must hear these ducks every morning, sitting on chimneys and quacking away. I don't know if this is a trait of Australian wood ducks in particular, but the first time I saw ducks here on chimneys, in trees, on telephone lines ... I thought it was a bit funny looking. So when I saw the ducks on the chimneys this morning, I thought I better put some photos on my blog.
(Also, I have to say I'm pretty excited to see some Canada geese next month!)
Funny to see ducks up high because they are usually on the ground around here, although I have seen them on a roof, I get a kick from it every time. Also, I actually saw a Canada goose on a roof for the first time the other day, very strange.
