The Pacific/Eastern Koel
We get Pacific Koels (also known as Eastern Koels, Eudynamys orientalis), a type of cuckoo each summer, though the birds are more often heard than seen. They have a very distinctive call: which the first time heard in late October-early November makes it seem like spring is truly turning into summer. (Wikipedia of course has the soundbyte if you want to hear it.)
March 1 marks the beginning of autumn in the Australian calendar and today with daytime temperatures not getting much higher than 60F, cloudy and drizzly, it certainly felt like fall. We have occasionally seen the Koels fly into our yard over the summer (sometimes stealing a raspberry or the like) but I suspect our chances to see them are getting slim as they will be migrating north again soon. This morning a male Koel happened to land on the powerline leading to the house before flying into our Chinese pistachio tree, allowing me to take just a couple snaps before he flew away.
