Mongolia - Drive to Bayanlig

The day we left Khermen Tsav was a day of mostly driving through the desert. We saw so many varied desert landscapes: some quite rocky and barren, some filled with zag and other scrub, some flat and wide plains between mountains, and some extremely hilly areas. We had an amazing drive on a ridgeline, steep hills rolling out from either side as far as we could see. It was also extremely empty: we had probably driven for four hours before we saw some tiny ger in the distance.

We also saw some really amazing rocks: enormous weathered boulders that had been carved out with massive holes, huge ridges of rocks extending like spines out of the earth, and truth to be told there were definitely times we were driving along that I saw some pretty red or purple or green rock go by that I wish I could have gotten out of the car to pick up and photograph (or put in my suitcase.)

We got a flat tire driving through a wide rocky valley so it was a good opportunity to stretch our legs and take photos of the mountains. It was a cloudy day, which probably made our driving much more comfortable that it wasn't full on sun. When we got back on the road we drove to the small town of Bayanlig, where we stayed at a hotel, ate camel stew for lunch and spaghetti for dinner, took showers and watched some Mongolian television (in our case, music videos and Korean drama) before calling it a night.
