Burning Mountain

On our drive back from Sydney to Uralla we finally stopped at Burning Mountain, a place we have been interested in visiting for over a year. Burning Mountain is a nature preserve just off the New England Highway just north of Wingen. From the nature preserve to Uralla is about a two hour drive, so although it is in the New England region is is still pretty far from our backyard.

The name of the preserve comes from the naturally ignited burning coal seam, located approximately 100 feet underground. It is estimated it has been burning for some 6,000 years.

The mountain itself is a fair walk outside the rest stop. The signage indicates you should give yourself two hours for the return trip, but that may be a bit generous as we did the entire trip in about 50 minutes. As we had two hours to drive to get home we took the walk rather briskly

A very green pond ... that doesn't seem right.

Lots of kangaroos on the walk. Can you spot the one here?

We saw a lot of kangaroos on our hike! Probably the most kangaroos we've ever seen on a single walk.
