On our drive from Coffs toward Pacific Palms, we stopped outside Port Macquarie to visit the Billabong Wildlife Park. The highlight of the park is probably the open kangaroo and wallaby enclosure where wallabies come up and beg for food. We also saw dingoes, emus, parrots, storks and fairy penguins (the only penguins with colonies in Australia - we're hoping to see some on Bruny Island in Tasmania!) The zoo also has meerkats and a snow leopard as part of its attractions. We felt really sorry for the snow leopard .. it was really hot and humid. It doesn't seem like a good place for that animal.
Of all things, after the adorable wallabies, one of the most memorable moments (for me) during this visit was seeing a couple rats sneaking around. We saw one running outside the rabbit enclosure and another had gotten into a bird cage to steal food. The parrots were not pleased about the intruder and had it cornered. They were antagonizing it and nipping at its tail.
Fairy Penguin or Little Penguin
Major Mitchell's Cockatoos
Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
Black-necked Stork
Tawny Frogmouth. We saw one this night in Pacific Palms! It was really amazing.
