Skink

This guy almost gave me a heart attack when I nearly stepped on him, going out to hang the rest of the laundry.  I opened the door, saw a scuttling of movement from just almost beneath my feet and the human-sees-snake reflex kicked in.  (What with that really big spider last week, the front door is a popular place for creatures to hang out.)  (Maybe because it's nicely shaded.)  (Maybe this guy eats really big spiders.)

Some kind of skink ... I think.  (Who knew skinks could be so big.)  It was a little more than a foot long.

I'm sure I startled it but he didn't seem too frightened, as he snuck past me and my laundry basket into the backyard, which I took as my cue to run get the camera.  He didn't mind me as I hung the rest of the laundry and went along his way.

Sneaking around the water heater
Moves like a snake.

Not gonna lie.. the name of the family skinks belong to (Scincidae) just seems kind of funny to me.

30-oct-14 update: Took a look in the Eastern Australian wildlife book in the library and from that I would hazard a guess that it might be a Cunningham's Skink ... but as with most things, I'm not completely sure.
